It can be said, after considerable simplification, that partnership, in contrast with competition, is characterised not by struggle but by cooperation. This is a new trend in the approach to the realisation of construction projects. Divergent interests are being replaced by the will to share common success in completing construction projects. Companies work together, with the goal of achieving the target result and mutual benefits.

Managing Change in Construction Projects: a knowledge-based approach offers a new perspective on construction project change by viewing the process of change management as a knowledge-intensive activity, where team members bring their tacit and explicit knowledge into the situation; share, create and capture this collective knowledge for future re-use in similar situations. Through this knowledge-based approach, construction teams can successfully resolve and learn from change events, leading to an overall improved performance of the industry. The book will make a significant contribution to our understanding of construction project change by offering new theoretical and practical insights and models grounded in results of case studies conducted within two collaborative construction project team settings. By demonstrating how the social construction of knowledge works in construction settings, the authors challenge the prevailing change management solutions based on ‘hard’ IT approaches. They put forward a balanced view that incorporates both IT–based and socially constructed approaches to effective management of construction project change. helps construction managers to improve and learn through the process of construction project change presents new theoretical models and offers practical guidelines first research-based book to directly address project change from a knowledge-based perspective draws on detailed studies with construction companies, including Ballast Construction and Kier Construction encourages a move from the information driven, process integrated approach to a knowledge-based view

Construction Management is a wide ranging discipline, but ultimately it is a demanding, hands-on discipline concerned with the management of people, plant and materials, all mobilised to complete a building project safely, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction. Management of Construction Projects is a highly illustrated series of case studies based on seven live construction management projects, demonstrating the very practical nature of managing projects. The detailed case studies cover a variety of construction projects, varying in value from £1million to £117 million, including a major inner city office block, a portal framed factory unit, a university refurbishment project, a superstore & car park and a new school building. The case studies emphasise detailed on site management procedures and identify a predominantly functional approach to managing projects. A number of related chapters covering practical and theoretical aspects of construction management support and illustrate the individual case studies. With a strong emphasis on the practical nature of the subject, Management of Construction Projects is an ideal introduction to the subject for all students on construction and related degree and diploma programmes. It will be of particular interest to students preparing for the CIOB EPA programme and the new NVQ courses at level 4 and 5 in construction management.

The main objective of this paper is to examine whether firm''s size, growth opportunity, and firm''s reputation affect the debt level (leverage) of the construction companies in Malaysia. The study uses the data from ten selected Malaysia''s construction companies for the period from 2001 until 2008. Using the panel data technique, the estimation results show that size of construction companies has a strong significant positive relationship to the firm''s leverage. The finding is consistent with the previous findings that firm''s size adds huge information in explaining the level of debt. The results also suggest that company''s leverage is positively affected by firm''s reputation. On the other hand, growth opportunity has inverse relationship with leverage, indicating that high leverage would retard the growth of firms.

This book contributes to the discourses on the China-Africa relations. It particularly focuses on the China-Ghana link, and engrossed itself with the central question: What has been the impact of the China-Ghana economic relations on the performance of Ghana's textile and construction industries? This question and its subsidiaries stem from the claim by industry players and observers that the influx of foreign textiles, particularly the China made, is militating against the performance of the Ghanaian textile sector. Besides,it is also claimed that the increasing infrastructural financing by the PRC and subsequent taking up of projects by foreign companies and the Chinese construction firms in particular, is incapacitating the Ghanaian construction industry. This piece conducts a case study on the respective industries understudy towards shedding some remarkable light, and bringing forth some unique perspective on the subject matter. The book should be useful to those interested in the impact of China's rise in the global economy, and in particular China-Africa relations.

The current study attempts to contribute to the debate on formation of the EU energy policy towards Russia. The main purpose of the research is to establish, how the EU Member States'' perception of Russia influences their energy policy choices and contributes to the formation of the official EU position in the EU-Russia energy relations. The issue is analyzed from the constructivist perspective, thus departing from the assumption that international relations are a social construction, where identities and perceptions of the actors substantially influence the actual decision making. The research question is answered by means of analysis of official positions of the two EU Member States (Germany and Poland) and the EU itself concerning the two recent cases on the EU-Russia energy relations agenda. The two considered cases are the Nord Stream gas pipeline construction and the Russia-Ukraine gas dispute – 2009.

This book presents the approach to branding activities of the biggest start-up companies of Switzerland. The goal is to analyze the practices and the level of reception of branding concepts by newly created companies. For this purpose, fifteen start-up companies in Switzerland were studied and compared from the branding and corporate communication point of view. Even though a vast literature covers the topic of branding for well-established companies, still very few studies focus on the crucial starting phase of a company. The study took place in 2006 and analyzed the branding activities of fifteen among the largest Swiss start-ups. The companies are analyzed from a branding perspective through interviews, observations, website and logo analysis. Theoretical and practical implications are illustrated, with the aim to extrapolate useful information for entrepreneurs.

The Russian market is considered to be a huge opportunity for Multinational Enterprises from Western Europe. The focus of this book is the analysis of the choice of entry modes of Austrian construction companies into the Russian market, their motivations, their activities, their success factors and strategies for further expansion in the CIS region. Four Austrian construction companies which have been expanded to Russia and CIS were selected for analysis. When entering the Russian market, there are comprehensive bureaucratic procedures to be met which derive from legislation or simply habit. Trust and long-standing collaboration are sometimes more important than purely economic criteria. The local business environment has decisive impact on the operational activities of the companies. The policies of the host countries affect operational activities (strict regulations). Other objectives are the comparison of the companies and the examination of future strategies and expansion plans of those companies in Russia and CIS (further expansion or withdrawal).
